Experience the beautiful Isle of Wight
The Isle of Wight is a perfect summer destination just off the south coast of England, surrounded by crystal clear water and sandy beaches. The island benefits from being in the sunniest stretch of the UK, with an average of over 5 hours of sunshine a day in the summer season. It's not just beautiful beaches and warm waters, though - the Isle of Wight has a thriving tourism industry, with countless attractions, including a zoo, theme park, castle and picturesque villages.
If you're looking for an adventure, look no further - you'll find everything from round the island cycling routes to clifftop hiking trails, SUP boarding and sailing tours, sand yachting, windsurfing and kayaking lessons, mountain bike trails and even Segway racetracks!
What should I know about the Isle of Wight?
How do I get to the Isle of Wight?
There are no direct, commercial flights to the Isle of Wight, so a ferry is the only option for travelling to the island. However, there's an airport in Southampton and a train/bus link directly to the ferry terminal (every 30 mins), so you can fly to the Isle of Wight if you're happy to finish the trip on public transport.
The ferry trip is across the Solent, which is a very calm stretch of waters. If you have a sensitive stomach and want to avoid any hint of seasickness, you can go by FastCat, the Portsmouth to Ryde catamaran, which is the most stable route and takes just 22 minutes.
Book your ferry through Aria Resorts and you can save up to 50%.
How big is the Isle of Wight?
The Isle of Wight is 150sq mi - it's about the same size as Birmingham or everything inside Zone 3 in London. You can travel from one end to the other in about 45 minutes, and if you're based in the centre, such as at Rookley Park, nowhere is more than half an hour away.
Despite the small size of the island, there are plenty of attractions. The long coastline, with a 67 mile coastal path, also means you can always find a quiet place to get away from it all. The Bay Colwell is a perfect coastal destination, with a beach just a short walk away.
The small size of the island means that it's great for cycling, though there are some steep hills in the centre and the sloping coastal road can be a challenge in parts!
Where should I stay on the Isle of Wight?
If you're interested in visiting attractions, they're very spread out, with The Needles in the far west, the Isle of Wight Zoo in the far east and Carisbrooke Castle in the centre. It's best to find a central location that's well-connected to the road network, and we think that Rookley Park is perfect, with lakeside accommodation and family activities in the holidays.
Want to get away from it all? The far west of the island is a peaceful corner, with fewer tourists and some lovely sandy beaches. The Bay Colwell has newly-refurbished luxury hot tub cottages just a short walk from the sea, perfect for a real escape.
Can I take my pet to the Isle of Wight?
The Isle of Wight is a perfect destination for animal lovers, whether you want to go horse-riding, visit the zoo or bring your dog along for a walk. Your dogs can even travel for free on Wightlink ferries, and you won't need to book ahead.
There are some great dog-friendly beaches or you could stay on the beaten track. With over 500 miles of footpath, you'll never run out of places to explore!
If you're looking for dog-friendly accommodation, look no further as all our sites offer pet-friendly options. At Rookley Park and The Bay Colwell, you can even stay in a luxury hot tub cottage and bring the pet along, too!
