Seaside fun is a special part of family holidays in south Devon, with endless activities on offer, from bodyboarding to kayaking, and beaches like Bigbury and Bantham bursting with beauty. But the magic doesn’t end there. Families can brave the rollercoasters at Crealy, Devon’s largest theme park, or mingle with the penguins at Living Coasts zoo in Torquay. Dartmouth is a hub for watersports, with Surfing, kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding and coasteering all on offer, as well as a spot of crabbing! Woosh down the zipline or prove your prowess on the ropes course at River Dart Country park, a local family favourite. Or head to Plymouth for tales of maritime history and to marvel at the sealife in the UK’s largest aquarium.

An energy packed dayDo you dare to play?
Looking for outdoor adventure? At River Dart Country Park you've come to the right place. There's a host of things to explore - play forts, pirate ship lake, assault course and pump track. For adrenaline junkies, take on the challenge of dare devil activities like high ropes, zip wire, zorbing and much more. Who's in?
There’s more than 4,000 seafaring critters to meet at this impressive aquarium. Fearsome sand tiger sharks patrol the tanks alongside graceful green turtles and gliding rays. Look out for the winding tentacles of an octopus and the vivid orange of the clownfish. The aquarium holds special events such as Toddler Tuesdays with stories, crafts and puppet shows, and there’s also a soft play to tire out the little tinkers. Refuel at the onsite cafe then get back in there to bond with the barracudas.
Sea kayak DevonMini expeditions
Sea Kayak Devon is based in Dartmouth and runs kayaking trips for children as young as 5. Follow their guides to hidden shipwrecks, secret lagoons and spooky sea caves. They’ll bring along lobster pots to see what you can tempt inside - maybe a crab, a lobster, or even an octopus (all of which will soon be safely back in the ocean)! Stop to build a driftwood campfire, and look out for wildlife like dolphins all along the way.
Bigbury beachLimitless family fun!
Let the breeze tickle your face and admire the captivating views as the kids bodyboard, kitesurf or windsurf their way to the best holiday of their lives. Bigbury beach has a huge selection of watersports equipment to hire and has plenty of space to fling frisbees and continue the family football tournament. Sneak over to Burgh Island at low tide and feel like kings of the castle, or if it’s running you can take the ‘sea tractor’! With toilets, parking and cafes right next to the beach, there’s all you need for the perfect family day out.
